Staying Healthy During Labor Day

Heart of Texas Healthcare System encourages residents to focus on their health during the upcoming holiday.

BRADY, Texas (Aug. 26, 2024) – As the Labor Day holiday approaches, Heart of Texas Healthcare System (HTHS) encourages the community to prioritize health and well-being during this festive time. While it's a time for relaxation and enjoying the company of loved ones, it's important to make mindful choices that support overall wellness. HTHS offers practical advice to help individuals maintain their health goals throughout the holiday weekend.

Labor Day often marks the end of summer and is celebrated with picnics, barbecues, and outdoor activities. However, the enjoyment of these events should not come at the expense of one's health. HTHS emphasizes the significance of staying mindful of health, even amidst the festivities.

Alexandria “Allie” Jordan, RN, FNP-C, at Brady Medical Clinic, a service of Heart of Texas Healthcare System, stresses the importance of making healthy decisions during holiday gatherings. "Labor Day is a wonderful opportunity to unwind, but it's crucial not to lose sight of our health," Jordan says. "Simple choices like staying hydrated, eating balanced meals, and keeping active can make a significant difference in how we feel during and after the holiday. Enjoying the holiday doesn’t mean sacrificing your health; it’s about finding a balance."

For food and drink, Jordan suggests opting for lighter, healthier alternatives that still allow for indulgence without overdoing it. "Enjoying a barbecue with family doesn't mean we have to overindulge. Grilled vegetables, lean meats, and fresh fruits are delicious and nourishing options. Additionally, drinking water or herbal teas instead of sugary or alcoholic beverages can help maintain energy levels and prevent dehydration."

Jordan also emphasizes the importance of portion control, especially when it comes to calorie-dense foods. "It's easy to get carried away with larger portions during celebrations. But by serving smaller portions and savoring each bite, we can enjoy our favorite foods without the guilt or the extra calories."

In addition to mindful eating, staying physically active during the holiday is essential for overall wellbeing. "Even with the Texas summer heat, it's important to find ways to stay active," Jordan advises. "Engaging in light physical activities, whether it's a morning walk, an evening bike ride, or a family game of frisbee, helps to keep your metabolism going and can counterbalance some of the extra calories consumed."

Jordan also highlights the importance of taking breaks and practicing moderation during extended holiday celebrations. "Pacing yourself, whether it's with food, drink, or activities, helps to avoid overexertion and ensures you have the energy to enjoy the entire weekend."

Beyond the holiday weekend, Jordan reminds the community about the importance of regular healthcare check-ups. "Preventive care is essential to long-term health, and scheduling your annual wellness exam is a great step to ensure you're on the right track," Jordan notes. "At Brady Medical Clinic, we're here to support our community in staying healthy year-round."

As a reminder, Brady Medical Clinic will be closed on Monday, Sept. 2, in observance of Labor Day. Regular office hours will resume on Tuesday, Sept. 3. If you require urgent medical attention, the emergency department at Heart of Texas Healthcare System will be available to serve you and your family.
